Place of birth: Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, Haiti

Biography:

Louisiane St-Fleurant was born in Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, Haiti. She relocated to Soisson-la-Montagne where she worked as a cook for the artists of the Saint Soleil art community before beginning to paint herself. Her colorful and vibrant folk paintings and sculptures often depict women, children, birds, animals and houses.

Despite having had no formal training, she remains one of Haiti's greatest and influential artists. Her work has been exposed in Haiti, Asia, Europe and the United States.

Interesting facts:

  • Louisiane started painting in her late 40's.

  • Her children Aliciane, Ramphis, Magda and Stivenson are also artists.

  • She was the only female artist in the Saint Soleil art movement.
